Five quirky ways to use your water filter

So you’ve decided on your home water filter and you’ve set up a healthy drinking routine with eight glasses of filtered water a day. You’re also using it for washing your veggies, cooking and for your kettle. That’s awesome!

But there are a few more uses you can do with your water filter that is a little bit… well, quirky!

1. Superfood Hydration

Did you know that you can add more filtered water to your diet through your food? Add a superfood, like chia seeds to the mix and you are already kicking some serious health goals.

Chia seeds are a popular superfood of the moment but they go way back. Originally from South America, they were used by Aztecs and Mayans for strength. They are packed with nutrition, including fibre, protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and micronutrients to provide the body with sustained energy.

Another clever thing about these little power seeds is that they are hydrophilic. That means they absorb 12 times their weight in water.  So all you need to do is soak a handful of chia seeds in filtered water and add them to your morning cereal, smoothie or yoghurt and you are packing a superfood punch. Plus upping your hydration levels at the same time!

2. Make Your Own Milk

Another health trend at the moment is to go dairy free. With filtered water you can ditch the dairy and make your own almond milk. It’s the perfect healthy alternative to cow’s milk.

You just need 1 cup of raw almonds and 2 cups of filtered water, plus a pinch of sea salt.

The process is really simple.  Pre-soak the almonds overnight in filtered water at room temperature. Then rinse clean in the morning. Remove the skin by pouring boiling filtered water over the almonds. Leave them for 5 minutes and then drain. The skins should come off easily.

Next, add the almonds and 2 cups of filtered water to a blender and blend well. Drain the almond meal through a fine sieve or use a cheesecloth to strain. Allow 3 -5 hours if you are using this method. You can store your milk in the fridge for up to 3 days. (Recipe Source – Good Food)

3. Create the Best Sponge Cake

Invest in a carbonating system like a Sodastream to add some fizz to your filtered water. Of course it’s a great way to jazz up your drinking water but it also does wonders for your baking.

Add some to your next cake mix and you’ll have the fluffiest, lightest sponge cake.

Perfect for afternoon tea. And a clever little secret if you want to impress at the local bake sale!

4. Add Some Crunch to Your Vegetables

You may already be blanching your vegetables in filtered water but a little secret trick that some of the top chefs are using is to use sparkling water. If you fizz up your filtered water and use it for boiling or blanching, your veggies will have a super vibrant colour and extra crunch.

5. Clean Your Home with Filtered Water

If you are looking for a super healthy and clean home.

You can avoid unnecessary harsh chemicals and use filtered water as a healthy alternative for cleaning your house.

It’s easy to create a non toxic cleaning solution by just using lemon juice and filtered water. Add half the juice of a lemon and 1 cup of filtered water to a glass spray bottle and shake to combine.

Spray the mixture on mirrors, windows and glass surfaces. For best results buff clean with a microfibre cleaning cloth.

Simple and it smells divine.
