The Best Apps to track your Water intake

How much water should we drink every day? Well the jury is still out on that one…

Australia’s current dietary guidelines don’t recommend that we drink a specific amount of water. We should simply ‘drink plenty of water’. The guidelines also encourage us to opt for water over juices, soft drinks, cordials or the like.

Nutrient Reference Values Australia advises that adult men should drink 2.6 litres of water per day (about 10 cups) and adult women should drink 2.1 litres per day (about eight cups).

Of course, certain people need extra fluids – breastfeeding mothers, those living in hot climates and people on a high protein diet.

They key takeaway is that we should drink plenty of filtered water every day.

What happens when you don’t drink enough?

Water makes up 50-80% of our body weight. Every cell, tissue and organ in our body relies on water to function.

You probably already know the feeling of dehydration… dry mouth, headaches, foggy head and feeling dizzy. These are good signs that you need to pick up that drink bottle. You should also note the colour of your urine. If it’s yellow, dark yellow or orange, then drink water immediately.

Your kidneys do a great job in fluid regulation, so frequency of urination and colour of urination are your two best guides,” Associate Professor Desbrow said.

Consuming enough filtered water every day does wonders for your health. Water boosts energy, maintains brain function, regulates digestion and assists in weight loss.

Four great apps to track water

We have found four awesome apps to help you stay on track with your daily water intake.

1.My Water - Daily Water Tracker

The My Water app allows you to set your daily water goals based on your gender, weight and level of exercise. You can then set when and how often you would like the app to remind you to drink water.

The cool water tracker image looks like a glass of water. Try to fill the glass by the end of the day. This target allows you to include other drinks towards your daily target.

2.Drink Water Reminder N Tracker

The Drink Water Reminder app allows you to track your daily water using your drink bottle as a visual cue. As with other water apps, users initially set up their target water quantity per day and then how often they would like a reminder notification.

This app links up with the Apple Health app and an Apple Watch.

Drink Water Reminder really makes users visually accountable for the amount of water they are drinking daily.

3.Plant Nanny

Plant Nanny is THE most downloaded water reminder app in App Store. It’s been download by over 1 million users! It also won ‘Best App of 2013’.

It’s no wonder this app is so successful… unless you drink enough water, your plant does not thrive. You feel kind of responsible for this cute little plant.

The app is incredibly simple to use. Initially you set up your water targets based on weight, climate and activity. Then, you open the app and tap literally one button to track your water intake. If you disable push notifications, it just sits in the background and doesn’t really do anything.

4.Aloe Bud

The Aloe Bud app refers to itself as your ‘pocket self-care companion’.

The creator of this app put a great deal of research into the language and motivational aspects of Aloe Bud. For example, users are not asked for personal details or asked to join a community where they might feel judged.

This app is ideal for those who like a holistic approach to their health. If you find lots of phone notifications annoying, you can easily set reminders when they suit you.
