Fresh Filtered Water on Tap

Seven fun crunch and sip ideas

Whether it is called crunch and sip, munch and crunch or fruit break, it is a staple of primary schools around the country for the kids to all stop and refuel with fruit, vegetables and water.

At Water Filters Australia we’re all for anything that encourages a healthy lifestyle – it’s a big part of why we do what we do! If you’re looking for some ideas to make crunch and sip more fun, we’ve got seven to get you started.

Cut the fruit into shapes

Some kids will happily eat any fruit you pop in their lunchbox… others will need a bit more of an incentive. If yours fall into the latter category, it’s amazing what a fun shape can do to get them to try something new.

Use a few different cookie cutter shapes – stars, hearts, flowers or whatever you have in the drawer. Melons and pineapple are good candidates for being cut into shapes, but you can also try apple or even vegetables like carrot or cucumber.

Wash your fruit and vegetables with filtered water before you cut them and you’ll ensure they taste their best without any of the chlorine found in tap water.

Leave a note

This is an easy way to bring a smile to their face. It can be as simple as telling them you love them or reminding them of something you know they will otherwise forget.

If you are packing a banana for crunch and sip, you could even write the note or a simple smiley face on the banana skin.

Fill their water bottle with filtered water

We all – kids included – need to drink enough water each day to stay hydrated and healthy. But often kids don’t like the taste of tap water… and we don’t blame them! Tap water has chlorine added to it, along with a range of other nasties, that impact the flavour of the water.

Our water filtration systems filter the chlorine from tap water to make it taste great!

If your school allows naturally flavoured water, you can also add some cut up fruit like strawberries or oranges for an extra flavour boost.

By using a reusable water bottle filled with filtered water you are not only giving your kids the best tasting water but also saving more plastic bottles from ending up in landfill. It’s a win/win.

Spiralize the vegetables

If you struggle with your kids eating vegetables, try spiralizing them for something a bit different. Carrot and zucchini both work well in a spiralizer and will add a bit of excitement to their lunch box.

Healthy vegetable sticks on plate

Add a dip

Kids love to dip. And it makes eating veggie sticks that much more fun.

The beauty of serving this up for your kids is that you can get extra veggies and good stuff into their crunch and sip lunch box.

Try making a fresh guacamole, hummus or even a tzatziki with Greek yoghurt and cucumber. You can serve a dip with any vegetable sticks – carrot, cucumber, capsicum or even mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.

Rainbow made of bell peppers and white cauliflower

Make it colourful

Why not take the saying ‘eat a rainbow’ literally for crunch and sip?

You could make an actual rainbow with slices of capsicum with cauliflower clouds. Or go for a more diverse rainbow with different fruits and vegetables all lined up in the lunch box. Strawberries, watermelon, carrot, yellow capsicum, cucumber and blueberries are a good combo… or come up with your own take on a crunch and sip rainbow.

Transplanting a pepper plant

Grow your own

It’s amazing how kids are more willing to try something if they have grown it themselves. So why not help the plant their own crunch and sip garden so you can pick fresh produce from your own garden?

There is obviously a bit more effort involved in growing your own fruit and vegetables, but if you have the time and patience to do it, it will save you money on buying produce and also get kids more engaged in what they are eating.

Watering your plants is one of the little known everyday uses for filtered water. It keeps your plants healthy and strong!
